Working/Functional Title
Fellowship in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine
Position Summary
The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University welcomes applicants for a fellowship in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine.
The MSU Large Animal Hospital is the only full-service, 24-hour emergency large animal hospital in Michigan that provides medical procedures, surgery, and continuous care for critically ill animals year-round. It is also the only hospital in the state with board-certified specialists in Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) who have the necessary skills to care for horses, cattle, small ruminants, and pigs. Currently, the Large Animal Hospital has two faculty members who are board certified in ACVECC, with a training program accredited by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. The addition of a fellowship position would allow our institution to expand the LCS training mission for veterinary students and residents and ensure the service mission to our clients and referring veterinarians.
The applicants will be enrolled in an intensive two-year program, participating in large animal emergency procedures, surgery, and clinical experience. The program involves 60 ECC-focused weeks where they will engage in clinical practice, and their time off clinics will allow for up to 34 immersion weeks in medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, neurology, ophthalmology, and independent study to fulfill the ACVECC requirements. The fellowship will also allow participation in a directed research project to fulfill the requirements for publication by the ACVECC. At the end of the program, it is expected that the candidate will have fulfilled the credential requirements to apply for board certification in the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.
