Position Summary

A full-time Research Associate position is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Institute of Global Health at Michigan State University under the supervision of Dr. Irene Xagoraraki and Dr. William Cunningham. Strong molecular microbiology/environmental virology laboratory skills are desired for the position, and a willingness to travel to Iquitos, Peru, for sample collection. The Research Associate will work on a project focused on environmental/wastewater surveillance to identify endemic and emerging diseases in global settings, including Latin America. This position will involve molecular microbiology laboratory and data analysis-related work. The position will require strong communication and leadership skills, proposal writing skills, and the ability to collaborate with scientists, engineers, and public health professionals on a fast-paced project.  We are looking to fill the position ASAP. This is a one-year fixed-term appointment with the possibility of renewal based on the availability of funding, satisfactory performance, and mutual agreement.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Engineering or equivalent

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD degree in Environmental Engineering, Molecular Microbiology, Virology, or a closely related field.
  • Significant experience in molecular microbiology laboratory work.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting and be highly self-motivated.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to Iquitos Peru for sample collection.
