Position Summary

The Jacob laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is looking for a laboratory technician to assist with mouse colony management and ongoing research projects performed by undergraduate and graduate students. The candidates’ duties will include management of transgenic mouse colonies such as daily monitoring and census, breeding, weaning and genotyping. Experimental duties include weighing, tumor measurements, DNA electro-vaccination, bleeding, substance administration, immune monitoring and tissue collection. The successful candidate will also assist with general lab management such as maintaining supplies and reagents and coordinating with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) during inspections and for disposal of hazardous waste.

Duties:

*Assist with maintenance of transgenic mouse colonies including setting up breeding's, genotyping, allocating mice for experiments in collaboration with research personnel.

*Assist with ongoing experiments led by the PI and other research personnel. Tasks include mouse weighing, tumor measurements, cage changes, administration of experimental substances by intraperitoneal or intramuscular injection, electro-vaccination and tissue collection.

*Assist PI and other research personnel with running some laboratory experiments and collecting data. Examples include flow cytometry or cell culture.

*Regular logging of laboratory safety protocols and requirements, such as eye wash stations and disposal of hazardous and biohazardous waste.

*Ordering and maintaining laboratory reagents and supplies.

Laboratory animal handling experience (colony management, breeding, treatment and necropsy) are required. Experience with cell culture and flow cytometry is a bonus.

Regular hours 8 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with occasional weekends for sick mice.

This is an off-dated position, funded for 1 year from date of hire, with possible extension contingent upon funding and mutual agreement.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals.

 

Laboratory animal handling experience (colony management, breeding, treatment and necropsy) are required.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with cell culture and flow cytometry is a bonus.

BSc degree in biological sciences

3-5 years of experience
