Position Summary

The MSU Libraries seeks a Communications Coordinator to assist in coordinating the MSU Libraries internal and external communications to promote the Libraries’ abundant initiatives, resources and services to the MSU and broader community. This position is part of the Diversity, Inclusion, and Organizational Development Division and reports to the MSU Libraries’ Communications Manager. The Communications Coordinator will assist with initiatives related to social media content and email campaigns; press releases and other promotional copy; exhibit materials; the Libraries’ bi-annual Insight magazine and other publications; and other projects as needed. This new position will work with multiple units across the Libraries to identify and develop content that highlights the Libraries as the heart of academic life at Michigan State University. The Communications Coordinator will also collaborate and communicate effectively with core stakeholders including students, faculty, donors and colleagues.

Characteristics Duties and Responsibilities

  • In consultation with the MSU Libraries Communications manager, plan, prepare, review, and schedule content that promotes the activities, resources, and values of the MSU Libraries, with an emphasis on DEI initiatives.
  • Actively engage on the MSU Libraries main accounts with peer institutional accounts and direct messaging.
  • Coordinate social media efforts between individual units within the Libraries and between the Libraries and individual units on campus.
  • Monitors various publications and electronic sources of news and commentary for potential relevance to unit activities.
  • Crafting compelling stories that communicate the impact of the Libraries in the teaching, learning and research lifecycle of students, faculty and staff at MSU.
  • Providing editorial support for content coming out of the Communications Unit and other Libraries units as needed.
  • Creating content including graphic design for both print and digital promotional materials or having knowledge of and experience with graphic design to ensure the development of quality graphic design elements created by various content providers
  • Representing the Libraries in various activities and participating in meetings related to marketing and communication within the University (e.g., University Communications) and with a variety of regional and national organizations.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Communications, Telecommunications, Journalism, Marketing, or Public Relations; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in internal communications; news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation software; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; or radio production; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive, enthusiastic and productive collaborations working with diverse audiences, constituencies, and colleagues including faculty, students, administrators, consortia partners, and national organizations.
• Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and an intent to work in and foster a collaborative, respectful culture.
• Knowledge of or willingness to advance skills in accessibility practice
• Knowledge of various editorial styles including AP, CMS, etc.
• Knowledge of design software programs including Adobe Creative Cloud.
• Advanced degree in Communications, Digital Media, or similar.
